Chapter 1

The curse had passed Marcus Sterling's knee. He pressed his back to the smokehouse wall and watched the blue climb his leg. His jeans would not come off. He had tried, in the halls, in the school, in a dozen locked rooms. The denim was fused to his skin now, and the color spread like frost up his thigh. Where it touched, his leg went numb and stiff. Soon it would reach his hip. Then his chest. The only thing that slowed it was rest. But resting meant stopping, and stopping meant the beast outside might find him again. Marcus had learned the rule the hard way. Movement fed the thing. Noise fed it. So he sat still in the ash and soot, coated head to foot, waiting for the numbness to ease. His leg throbbed. The blue crept another inch. A board creaked behind him. Marcus froze. Then a small voice spoke. "You can't just sit there." It was the boy from the old house. Black hair, a black shirt, jeans like Marcus's own. His face stayed scared, like it had been scared so long it forgot any other shape. Marcus had carried him out of the halls. The boy had followed since, silent and watchful, trusting Marcus to keep them both alive. "Resting slows it," Marcus said. "If I move, it spreads faster." The boy shook his head. He pointed up, past the smokehouse rafters, toward the dark farmhouse beyond the open door. "There's a room under the roof. The whispers can't get in. Nothing can." His voice dropped. "My sister went there." Marcus knew that story. The attic. The place the boy's sister entered and never came out of. "And she's still inside," Marcus said. "The curse comes from the halls," the boy said. "Everything from the halls dies in that room. Maybe the thing on your leg dies too." Marcus looked at his leg. The blue had reached mid-thigh. Rest would never outrun it. He needed to kill it, not slow it. The attic was the only place that killed what the halls made. He pushed himself up. His stiff leg buckled, and he caught the wall. Ash fell from his shoulders in gray sheets. The boy grabbed his arm. "Slow," the boy whispered. "No sound." They crossed the yard one careful step at a time. The farmhouse porch sagged under their weight. Inside, dust hung thick. They climbed the stairs. At the top, a narrow door waited beneath the roof beams. Marcus put his hand on it. The wood was cold. Behind it, there was no whisper at all. Only silence. He thought of the sister who went in and stayed. Then he thought of the blue reaching his chest. Marcus opened the door and stepped inside. The numbness in his leg stopped spreading at once. But the air pressed on him, heavy and still, and the door swung shut behind him with a soft, final click.
