Chapter 3

Margot dug a plot behind her diner and moved the wild herbs into it. She lifted each plant with care, roots and all, and pressed the soil around them. By morning the glow was gone. The chamomile drooped. The nasturtium curled brown at the edges. She picked a sprig and dropped it in her soup. The soup stayed only soup. The magic died the moment she took the plants from the field. She tried again the next day, and the next. She carried buckets of the field's own dirt. She watered at dawn like her grandmother had. Nothing held. The herbs kept their glow only where they grew wild. Picked, replanted, they faded within hours. She could harvest the patch, but she could never grow more. One patch could not fill a legendary tavern. Finnegan found her kneeling in the dead plot. He leaned in the pub doorway across the grass and watched her a while before he spoke. "You dug them up," he said. It was not a question. "They don't move. Fifteen years I watched your gran. She never took a root. She took the flower and left the plant." "Then how do I grow more?" Margot asked. "You don't," Finnegan said. "Not you." He looked past her, toward the pub. "Old woman comes through sometimes. Heals with roots. Knows more about growing than any market man." He said nothing else. He went back inside. The old woman came at dusk, drawn by the pub's light. Gray braid, shell necklace, a pouch of dried root at her hip. Margot had never met her, but she moved like someone who had knelt in a hundred gardens. She crouched at the dead plot and rubbed a brown leaf between two fingers. "Elara Rootwhisper," she said, without looking up. "These wanted the field. You gave them a box." "Can you make them grow anywhere else?" Margot asked. "No." Elara stood. Her knees cracked. "Some things only grow where they choose. I learned that the hard way. A sickness is killing my valley. The cure grows in one graveyard now. Three sites. Two are picked bare." She met Margot's eyes. "You can't move the magic. You can only find where it already lives." The words landed hard. Margot had spent three days fighting the ground. The answer was not to grow the herbs. It was to find every wild patch that already glowed. "Then I need to find them," Margot said. "All of them. Wherever they grow." Elara nodded once. "I know where things grow. And I need hands that can carry a cure." She held out a rough, callused palm. "Help me pull Shadowmoss from a child's grave. I'll show you every glowing patch in the realm." Margot looked at the dead herbs, then at the old woman's hand. She took it. The plot behind her diner would stay empty. But she finally knew the path to fill her tavern.
