Chapter 1

Margot Finch unlocked the library's back door at dawn and almost tripped over the crate. It sat on the old stone bench by the steps, plain wood, no label. She had been teaching herself bookbinding for months, fighting split spines and wrong tension, and the sight of professional tools inside the crate made her crouch down fast. Bone folders. Waxed linen thread. A sewing frame she had only ever seen in videos. Tucked between the awls, two small ceramic penguins in bright sweater vests held down a folded note. Margot lifted them carefully. They were warm from the early sun. The note was handwritten in slanted ink. "Margot — I heard you were stuck on the signatures. These belong with someone who'll use them. Come by the ivy pergola behind the house on Bellrose if you want to be shown, not told. — H. Alder." Margot read it twice. H. Alder. She knew that name. Old Mrs. Alder lived in the gilded Victorian at the end of the lane, the one wrapped in vines, the one Margot had walked past a hundred times without knowing a binder lived inside. Someone had noticed her struggle. Someone local. Someone who had not waited for her to ask. She folded the note into her pocket and lifted the crate against her hip. The tools were heavy. The invitation was heavier. For the first time in months, the next step in her work was not a video to rewatch but a door to knock on — and she was going to have to walk up and knock.
