Chapter 11

The handler knew the traitor now. That changed everything. Marigold stood outside the signal station at dawn, listening. No hound today. But the twin locked inside was no longer just a witness. She was bait. The Guild wanted her back, and they would tear the mountain apart to get her. Every hour the twin stayed here, the whole network hung on one door. Mara Thornshield spoke first. "We can't hold her. If the Guild takes this station, they follow the road to every trader we hide." Mara had run the covert network beside Marigold for months, and she had never once flinched from a hard truth. "She has to leave. Somewhere they can't reach." "Where?" Marigold said. "Every road belongs to them." A small voice answered from the frost. "Not every road." Nyx sat on the carved post, a girl one blink and a pale cat the next. The shapeshifter had walked out of the gods' own chamber and back again. She turned a warm disc in her fingers, two faces warped together, dark and light. "I know a wall that isn't a wall," she said. "Stars in it. A seam. I go through it now." She looked at the station door. "She could too." Marigold's throat tightened. "You'd take her past the gods." "Past everyone." Nyx hopped down. "The Guild can't follow where I walk." She held the charm out flat. "But a gate needs proof. A face it can hold." Marigold understood the price. Nyx would release part of herself to satisfy the gatekeeper. She had done it before. It cost her. "Do it," Marigold said. They opened the door. The twin blinked at the light, wrists thin, red hair matted. She looked so much like Saraphillia that Marigold's chest ached. "You sold children," Marigold said. "I won't hang you. But you can't stay. Go with her, or the Guild takes you and everyone you'd doom." The twin nodded, too tired to argue. Nyx pressed the charm to her own chest. It sank in and vanished. Then she breathed out, and a laughing shape stepped loose from her body—horned, winged at the heels, a herald born of two trickster selves. It grinned and stood between them and the empty air. The air split. A wall opened where there had been only cold—deep blue folded with gold, stars turning inside it like a slow tide. Nyx took the twin's hand. "Fast," she said. "Don't look back." They stepped through. The herald followed. The wall folded shut and left only frost. Marigold stood in the quiet. The twin was gone. The Guild's bait was gone. The network was safe. But the handler still knew Fennrick's face. And now the one witness who could name the Guild's crimes was beyond any court, any road, any reach—even hers.
