Chapter 5

Three days after the watcher left, a man crawled through the village gate. Blood soaked his shirt at the shoulder. He was pale, half-elf by his ears, and he could not walk straight. Marigold reached him first. He clutched her sleeve and said one word: "Hide me." She knew the cost. The watcher came back on his rounds each week. If he found a wounded stranger, the whole village would pay. Mara appeared at the wall, hood down, boots silent. She read the man in a glance. "Guild did that," she said. "He ran from them. If they tracked him here, we have hours." She crouched and pressed her hand to the wound. The man hissed. "He can't stay in a house," Mara said. "First door the watcher opens." Marigold thought fast. A house would not hide him. But the cliffs behind the village held something else. "The shelter behind the rock," she said. "The one that blends into the stone. No one finds it who doesn't know it's there." Mara's jaw tightened. "That's our last safe hold. You bring a bleeding man there, you risk everything we built." "I know," Marigold said. "I'm bringing him anyway." They moved him at dusk. Marigold packed his wound and folded him into a metal case that opened far wider than it looked. He fit, knees to chest, breathing shallow. A huge shaggy cat trailed them up the path, silent, its plumed tail low. Marigold said nothing about it. The animal had followed the refugee since the gate. At the cliff face the stone shimmered and parted. The hidden fortress swallowed them. Marigold laid the man on the floor inside. He gripped her wrist. "They branded me," he whispered. "On the arm. The Guild marks its runaways. A hound smells the burn from a mile off." Mara heard it. She went still. "Then the fox charm won't help us. The dogs cut through it." She looked at Marigold. "You wanted to save one man. You may have led the whole pack to our door." Marigold pressed the man's hand flat and did not let go. "He's here. He stays. We don't hand people back to be killed." That was the line she would not cross, and both women knew it. By morning the refugee breathed easier. Marigold sat by a carved stone cairn near the shelter mouth, watching the trail below. The fortress held. She had hidden him. She had kept her word. Then the cat rose. Its ears turned toward the far ridge. Marigold followed its gaze. Down the mountain track, small and steady, a shape moved through the mist. A dog. Nose to the ground. Behind it, a rider in Guild colors. Mara stepped up beside her. She did not raise her voice. "There it is," she said. "He didn't come with questions this time."
