Chapter 1

Marina crouched at the back of her cave and measured the space with her arms. Two body-lengths deep. One wide. Not enough to hide a child, let alone the god the sky-hunters were chasing tonight. She was a river spirit, small and stubborn, and she had promised herself a thing bigger than she was. When the high gods started killing the low ones, she had chosen her falls as a door. Anyone hunted could pass through the water and vanish. That was the promise. The cave behind the falls made her a liar. A runner would come before dawn. She had heard it in the current three nights running — a name whispered upstream, a bounty whispered down. Whoever arrived first would press against this back wall and still show a shoulder to the opening. The hunters would see. They would reach in and drag the fugitive out by the hair. Marina pressed her palm to the stone and listened. The rock was thin here. Behind it, hollowness. She had felt it for weeks and pretended she hadn't. Breaking through meant waking whatever slept on the other side. She broke through anyway. She sang the note her mother taught her for splitting ice, and the wall cracked along a seam older than her falls. Cold air poured out. She pushed her head through and saw a long throat of stone running back into the hill, wide enough for ten bodies, dry, and already furnished. A low earthen house sat at the far end, roofed in packed sod, its wooden door still on its hinges. Someone had lived here once, long before her, and left everything in place. Something else had lived here too. It was curled around the little house like a dog around a bone. Stone plates layered its back. Red light moved under its skin where the plates didn't meet. One eye opened. The pupil found her. Marina did not run. Running was what prey did, and she had not come this far to be prey in her own water. She climbed through the gap and stood on the dry floor and made her hands into fists so they would stop shaking. "I need the room," she said. "I'll trade for it." The leviathan lifted its head. The house creaked as its tail slid off the roof. It did not speak, but it tilted its skull toward the cabin door, then toward her, and she understood the shape of the bargain without the words: the cabin was its, the tunnel was hers, and something would be owed later. She nodded once. Upstream, a body hit the water hard and started swimming for the falls. Marina heard the splash through the stone. Her sanctuary was three times bigger than it had been an hour ago, and it was no longer only hers.
