Chapter 5

Marina left the secret chamber with the queen's offer humming in her head. She swam home through quiet streets and slept badly. In the morning a small shell messenger tapped her window. Guardian Kaiari wanted to see her before the tide turned. The badge on her chest suddenly felt heavy again. She had one month to prove herself, and the Guardian would ask what she had done. Marina had no new tour, no new report, no clean answer she could give without saying too much. She met the Guardian at a quiet corner of the tavern near the docks, where a coral-crusted barrel served as their table. Kaiari sat with her purple robe folded around her tail. A small storage chest floated at her side, its lid open, empty. "I like to bring this," Kaiari said, tapping the chest. "Guides fill it with what they have learned. Show me what you would put inside." Marina's throat tightened. She could name three new visitors she had greeted. She could describe the songs the reef children sang last week. None of it was the truth pressing against her teeth. She thought of Nerilith. She thought of the king and queen in the round room. She thought of the door behind the door. "Guardian," Marina said, "I broke my promise to stay from the western door of the chapel. Sister Liera found a package, and I followed. Nerilith met me there. She took me through a hidden door I did not know existed. The king and queen were waiting inside." She kept going before she could stop. "They told me why Nerilith pushed me away. There is a surface king who hunts the queen. The chapel hides our safe channel to the scholars above. I have kept the secret since. I am telling you now because you asked what I have learned." Kaiari did not move for a long moment. Her purple eyes stayed on Marina. "I have never trusted Nerilith Vaeles," she said at last. "Even knowing the king and queen hold her leash. Cruelty in service of a good order is still cruelty." She closed the lid of the little chest with one careful claw. "But you. You broke a promise, and you brought me the reason. You could have hidden behind the crown. You did not." Sister Liera, who had drifted in behind Marina without a sound, gave a small nod from the doorway. Kaiari saw her and smiled. "You witnessed the first agreement. Witness this one too. The provisional badge stays. Not because of what Marina saw in that room, but because she chose honesty when silence would have served her." She touched Marina's badge with one fingertip. The metal warmed. Marina swam home lighter. The month still ran. The queen's offer still waited. But the Guardian's trust was no longer on loan. She had earned this piece herself, and she knew now what the rest would cost.
