Chapter 1
The tide stopped mid-beat, and Marina Tidecaller felt it like a fist closing in her chest. She stood in the shallows of a dead cove where no water moved. For weeks she had followed this silence, tracing it the way she traced every silence—water called her into being, and water led her here. The moon had abandoned the sea. The tides no longer had a hand to guide them. Marina meant to find the moon and end the feud, but standing in the still water, she finally understood the truth. This quarrel was not water's alone.
She carried a lantern with four glowing chambers, one for each element. The water chamber burned bright against her hip. The other three stayed dim. She could not read the moon's anger with water alone. She needed the ones who held the missing lights.
She found the fire one first, on cracked ground where a temple stood in ruins. Ignis Pyra crouched over a dry fissure, feeding heat into the stone. The essence of fire did not look up. The two of them had crossed paths before, and it had not ended kindly.
"You put out my flame once," Ignis said. "At the coast. I remember."
"I flooded a fire that would have burned a village," Marina said.
"You drowned three days of work." Ignis stood. Its head burned like a torch. "State your need."
"The moon left the tides. I can't fix it alone." She lifted the lantern. "Three chambers are dark. Yours is one."
The air shifted. Zephyr Gale stepped from behind a broken pillar, white hair moving though no wind blew. Air and water had never quarreled, but Zephyr's face was cold.
"You sense silence in water," Zephyr said. "I sense it in wind. Something cut the sky three years back. You never once asked why."
"I didn't know," Marina said.
"That's the problem," Zephyr said. "You only listen to your own water."
The ground rumbled. Terren Stoneheart rose from the temple floor, moss on its shoulders, roots wrapped at its waist. Earth spoke last.
"You want us to help the sea," Terren said. "The sea wears my coast down every year. You never asked earth for anything before now."
Marina looked at the three of them. Every element had a wound. Every wound touched her water somewhere she had never bothered to feel.
"You're right," she said. "All of you. I heard my own song and nothing else. But the moon didn't leave the sea alone. It left all of you. Look." She held the lantern high. The water chamber flared, then reached for the others. Faint light stirred in the fire, the earth, the air.
Terren stepped closer. "The lights want to touch."
"Then this temple is where we start," Marina said. "Where the four of us once stood together."
No one agreed. But no one walked away. The four elements stood inside the ruin, and for the first time, Marina felt four beats instead of one.
