Chapter 1

Marina Vandal wanted to paint the biggest coral reef mural the ocean had ever seen. She found her wall at dawn, a flat gray cliff on the seabed, wide as three city blocks. She shook her first can and pressed the nozzle. A red line bloomed across the stone. Then the water swallowed it. The paint uncurled into a pink cloud and drifted away. By the time she finished one scallop of coral, the start of it was gone. She tried everything. She painted fast. She painted in short strokes. She cupped her free hand around the nozzle to block the current. Nothing stuck. Her usual spray paints dissolved the second they touched open water. Three years she'd spent on her last mural, the one someone painted over. She would not let this one wash away before she even finished a line. "That won't work." The voice came from empty water. Marina turned and almost missed them. A wispy spirit hovered by the cliff, covered in shimmering ink splatter, a spray can in one hand. Aero Luminex. She'd heard the name in the tunnels. The tagger whose work no one ever saw, who hit the spots everyone forgot. Most swimmers drifted right through Aero without a blink. "Your paint's too thin," Aero said. "Open water eats it." They lifted their own can and sprayed a blue streak across the stone. It held. It did not smear or cloud. It sat there like it had dried on land. Marina stared at the blue mark. "How." "Sea prisms," Aero said. "You grind them into the paint. It sets underwater." They looked at her mural, the one lonely scallop fading at the edges. "You're trying something big." "Biggest reef the ocean's seen." Marina watched Aero's flat face for a laugh that didn't come. "Then you need more than a can," Aero said. "You need brushes that hold the mix. And a place to grind." Marina had spent her life alone with a wall. She didn't trust easy help. But her red line was already a pink ghost drifting toward the surface. "Why tell me?" Aero watched their own blue streak hold steady on the stone. "I tag places no one looks. Then the walls go gray again." They turned their aurora eyes on her. "Yours is a place someone might finally see." They led her to a hidden workshop tucked in the rock. Cabinets lined the walls, splashed with old tags, their shelves crowded with potion bottles. On a low shelf sat a set of brushes, handles packed with glitter that caught the dim light. Aero handed her one and set a bowl of crushed prisms beside it. Marina dipped the brush and dragged it across the cliff. The line held. It stayed. Her hand shook once, then steadied. The paint problem was solved. But the prisms in the bowl were nearly gone, and a reef that size would need far, far more.
