Martin steps through the broken gate of the lost theme park, a duffel bag slung over his shoulder. The old stage waits at the far end, paint peeling under a dead spotlight. He came here to learn something new, something past singing and acting. He wants to hold a crowd with no script, no cues, no safety. Rust-stiff figures sit in the seats, watching him with patient, unimpressed eyes. He sets down his bag and breathes. He climbs onto the vine-wrapped boards and drags three crates into a rough circle. No mic. No track. He pulls juggling pins from his bag, tosses one, drops it. The rusty figures do not move. Martin picks up the pin, plants his feet, and tries again. He keeps three pins in the air for eight clean beats, then lets one fall on purpose and grins at the mistake. A single rust-stiff figure tilts its head forward. Not applause. But not dismissal. Martin lowers his hands, heart loud. He has a foot on the stage now, and a long climb left. The tilted figure stands. Its joints whine. It walks to the edge of the stage and sets a small, dented bell on the boards. Then it returns to its seat. Martin stares at the bell. The other figures wait. He understands. One ring means stay. No ring means go. He picks up the pins again and steps into the circle of crates. The dead spotlight above him flickers once, then holds steady gold.
