Mary Kaylene locked the bedroom door and started the clock. She had one night to prove she was the best thing that ever happened to him. Her days were stuffed with his schedule, his moods, his phone glow at dinner. If she didn't carve out a moment tonight, the idea would die quiet like all the others. She slipped into the black lace two-piece he'd glanced at once in a store window months ago. She remembered. He never knew she did. On the dresser, she set out the diamond chain, square cut, fitted close like she'd heard him describe to a friend in passing. The small thing was the kicker. A tiny plush bulldog sat on top of the velvet box, wearing a paper crown. He'd laughed at a dog like it weeks ago and choked on his drink. She bet her whole night on that memory. She heard his key in the front door of the little house they shared. She breathed in, sat on the edge of the bed, and waited. The impulse hadn't fizzled. She'd built it into a room he had to walk into.
