Chapter 1

Master Hurtful Words walked the Ranch every morning to keep one promise: no one in Storyland Canada should hear words that wound. He mended feelings the way others fixed fences. But this morning he found a problem he could not fix. On the porch of the ranch house sat a lion cub, curled small, saying nothing at all. "Lucky Lion," Master Hurtful Words said. "They told me you won't talk." The cub looked up. His shoelaces trailed loose across the wooden step. He opened his mouth, then shut it. He wrapped his arms tighter around his knees and stared at the boards. Master Hurtful Words knew the shape of this. Some word had landed hard, and now it sat locked inside the cub. He could not soften a wound he could not name. To help, he needed to hear what was said. But Lucky Lion would not speak, and pushing would only close him tighter. So he did not push. He went inside and came back with a folded wool blanket, thick and warm, its squares faded red and yellow. He shook it open and draped it around the cub's shoulders. Then he sat down beside him on the step and said nothing for a while. The blanket seemed to loosen something. Lucky Lion pulled it close to his chin. "You don't have to say it loud," Master Hurtful Words said. "Just say it once. Then I can help." The cub swallowed. "Oh man," he mumbled. "It's kind of dumb." He picked at a loose thread. "I tripped on my laces at recess. Face-first, right in the dirt. And somebody said I was unlucky." His voice dropped. "Said I'm Lucky Lion but I'm really the unlucky one. Everybody heard it." There it was, the word said aloud at last. Master Hurtful Words felt the whole thing come loose. "That word hurt because it turned your own name against you," he said. "They took the good thing about you and made it a joke. That's why it stuck." Lucky Lion nodded slowly. "Yeah. That's it exactly." "Tripping isn't unlucky. It just means your laces came undone. That's a thing you're learning to fix, not a thing that's wrong with you." Master Hurtful Words leaned down. "Want to know something? You can already roar loud enough to reach across the whole savanna. That's not unlucky. That's rare." The cub sat up straighter under the blanket. A small, proud grin crossed his face. "I really can. First time I did it, I knocked my whole water bowl over." "See? Nobody said that at recess." Lucky Lion laughed, short and real. The silence was gone. "I gotta go find whoever said it," he said, kicking off the blanket. "Not to yell. Just to tell 'em they were wrong." Master Hurtful Words stood too. The cub could speak again, but now a new question waited at the Ranch gate: who had said it, and were they still saying it to others?
