Matilda stood in the shade of the station house veranda, watching dust rise from the track where a utility had just pulled away. She needed someone with real power to say yes to her marketplace — not the polite nods she usually got, but actual backing. Someone was coming who could give her that. A woman stepped out of the main house, wiping her hands on her apron. She'd raised four children out here and helped birth a dozen more across neighboring stations. When she spoke, people listened. She looked at Matilda for a long moment. "I'll tell the other mothers this marketplace of yours is worth their time," she said. "But first you show me something real. Not drawings or promises. Bring me proof it can work — a proper market day, flowers and goods and women actually trading. Then I'll use my name for you." Matilda's chest tightened. She'd expected questions, maybe doubt. Not a test. But the woman was already turning back toward the house, and Matilda realized this was the closest thing to yes she'd ever gotten.
