Chapter 1

Maya had a business plan folded in her back pocket and nowhere on campus to put it. She stood outside the main office in Houston heat that pressed through the windows, waiting to ask the principal for a room. Any room. A closet with a mirror would do. She wanted to open a student-run salon at school, one chair to start, where every Black girl who sat down learned how her own hair worked before anyone else told her it was wrong. She had the folder. She had a borrowed pink blow-dryer, a comb, and a flat iron zipped inside her backpack, all shining like they belonged in a store window. What she did not have was four walls. The principal saw her for six minutes. He said every room was assigned. The art room was assigned. The old computer lab was assigned. The book closet behind the library was, somehow, also assigned. He tapped her folder without opening it and told her to try again next semester. Maya walked out and sat on the bench by the vending machines and did not cry, because crying at school was a thing she had decided in seventh grade she would not do. Wren dropped onto the bench beside her, sketchbook open, hoodie sleeve smudged with ink. She drew Maya without asking, gave the drawing a folder labeled DENIED, and turned the page toward her. "You look like someone told you the library was on fire," Wren said. Maya explained in one long sentence: the salon, the tools, the principal, the closet. Wren listened, tore out the caricature, and handed it over. Then she said, "The old dance studio behind the field house. Nobody's booked it since the ceiling leaked. I know because I hide there. Custodian keys hang inside the equipment cage. Ask for it in writing and he'll say yes just to end the conversation." She shrugged. "Or don't. Daydream forever. Your call." Maya went back into the office before last bell. She wrote a one-page request naming the studio, the hours, and a faculty sponsor she would find by Friday. The secretary stamped it and slid a key across the counter without looking up. Maya walked out to the field house and turned the key. The room smelled like mildew and old rosin. One long mirror ran the length of the far wall, cracked at the corner but whole enough to see a face in. She set her backpack on the floor, unzipped it, and lined the dryer, comb, and flat iron along the barre. The space was hers. Now she needed a sponsor by Friday, and she had no idea which teacher would sign.
