Chapter 1

The stray-removal notice was still warm from the printer when Maya Heartwell tore it off the town board. The council would round up every loose animal in Fernsnarl by dawn. Maya had spent two years dreaming of a shelter for those animals. Now she had one night to save them before the trucks came. She ran home to the shelter she'd built with her own hands. Its wooden sign hung over the barn doors, the stables dark, the pastures empty and waiting. Empty was the problem. A rescue with no animals couldn't argue it was needed. If the council swept the strays away first, her whole plan died. Her old golden retriever met her at the gate. He was slow now, gray around the muzzle, but he pressed against her leg like he understood. "We have to bring them here tonight," Maya told him. "All of them." She couldn't do it alone. She grabbed her phone. Maya Chen answered on the first ring. She was president of the school's animal club, and she'd once skipped a test to bottle-feed abandoned kittens. "I saw the notice," Maya Chen said. No hello. "I'm already loading crates into my mom's van. Where do we start?" Relief loosened Maya's chest. "The drainage ditch by the mill. There's a dog and a cat that stick together. And a whole colony under the old feed store." They worked through the dark. Maya Chen drove; Maya coaxed. She found the pair first, a scruffy brown dog and a gray cat curled against him. The dog growled once, then let her lift them both into a crate. By midnight they'd caught nine animals. By two, seventeen. The stables filled with soft noises and shifting hay. At sunrise the council trucks rolled through Fernsnarl. Maya stood at her gate and watched them find nothing. Empty ditches. Empty alleys. Every stray was safe in her stables, fed and dry. A council officer climbed down and studied her full pastures. "You took them all," he said. It wasn't a question. "I gave them somewhere to go," Maya said. "That's what a rescue does." He frowned and wrote something on his clipboard. "Seventeen animals is a lot for one girl and no license. Somebody has to pay to feed them. Somebody has to answer for them." He tore off a slip and handed it over. "You've got a shelter full of animals now, Miss Heartwell. And an inspection in three days. Pass it, or we take every one." The truck pulled away. Maya looked back at her crowded stables. She had won. She had saved them all in a single night. And now she had three days to prove she could keep them.
