She sets her coffee on the counter and listens to the quiet house. The kids are still asleep. Nobody needs anything from her yet. At forty, she is standing at the edge of something new. The years of being needed are thinning out, and a different life is waiting on the other side. She wants this next part to be hers. She wants to enjoy it fully. But grief is sitting close too, fresh and heavy, and she knows the quiet she once craved now holds a sharper kind of stillness. She opens the drawer and takes out her mother's watch. The hands are stopped at 1:39. Her mother was fifty-nine. There was so much left she never got to do. The watch feels small and heavy in her palm. She pulls on her coat and walks out to the small garden behind the house. A smooth blue stone sits on the table where she left it last week. She sits down. She holds the watch in one hand and the stone in the other. She lets herself cry. She lets herself remember the apartment in Lindsay where her mother kept her plants on every windowsill. When the tears slow, she wipes her face and breathes out. She makes a quiet promise. She will not waste the years her mother did not get. She will build something of her own, starting today.
