Chapter 1
Melody stood barefoot at the edge of the deep dark woods and tried to walk out. She had tried before. Each time, Jeffery told her the path curved back, that a fire had closed the trail, that a man had been seen between the trees. She was smart enough to know the lies sounded like a child's story. She was tired enough to follow them anyway. That was the hold he had on her. She could see it and still not break it.
Her backpack was heavy on her shoulders. It held his snacks, his charger, his gum. None of it was hers. She looked down at her bare feet in the dirt and remembered she used to dance for no reason. She could not remember the last time.
At the forest's edge sat his camper. Cameras ringed it like eyes, mounted on every side, watching the trees and watching her. Jeffery leaned in the doorway, calm. He held a small carved ring between two fingers.
"The exit is eight hundred meters that way," he said, pointing deeper into the dark. "I logged it. Trust the data. Trust me."
Melody's stomach turned. Every instinct in her said he was pointing wrong. He always pointed wrong. The real way out was behind her, toward the light, and he had spent days teaching her not to believe her own eyes.
"That's backward," she said. Her voice shook. "You keep me here. You've kept me here the whole time."
"I keep you safe. Variable one: you leave. Variable two: you get hurt. I've run it. The numbers don't change." He held the ring higher. "I made this for you. It means you stay."
A white cat slid out from under the camper. His cat. It did not go to Jeffery. It crossed the dirt and pressed warm against Melody's ankle, then looked toward the far treeline and waited.
Melody followed its stare. Two girls stood at the edge of the light. They glowed soft and pale, like dawn held in two bodies. They did not speak. They simply stepped apart, and between them a true path opened, bright and clear and leading out.
Her whole body knew it was real. She had kept herself small for months. She saw that now. Not him. Her.
Jeffery pushed the ring toward her. "Take it. You need it. You need me."
Melody reached out. She took the ring. Then she turned and threw it into the dark woods, hard, where no camera could follow it.
"No," she said. "I don't."
She walked. The cat ran ahead of her. The glowing girls held the path open as she passed between them, barefoot, into the light. Behind her, Jeffery called her name twice, then went quiet. His cameras watched empty trees.
Melody did not look back. For the first time in months, her feet chose where they went.
