Chapter 6

The cheers faded, and the judges kept writing. Melody stepped off the stage on shaky legs. Her friends met her at the edge. The parrot landed on her shell, feathers bright as jewels. The starfish waved all five arms. The salamander clacked the glass in his cheeks. But Melody saw the crowd already turning toward the next act, and she knew the truth. She had made them go quiet once. Now they would want it again, and better. The organizer confirmed it. He climbed the stage and called out the rules. Each finalist would perform one last song. The crowd would decide the winner by their cheers. Melody's stomach dropped. Her whole act was silence. She had spent it. If she sang the same soft song again, the crowd would nod and clap and move on. She had nothing new to make them lean in. "I only know one trick," Melody said. "I go quiet. I already did." The parrot cocked his head. "So do it wrong," he said, with his mischievous spark. "On purpose." Melody blinked. The starfish caught on first. "Make them hush," the starfish said, bouncing. "Then break it yourself. Then hush them again. Play with them!" The salamander crawled forward and spat a bit of green sea glass into Melody's claw. He tapped his throat, then tapped the glass, fast, like a beat. Melody understood. He wanted rhythm. Not silence alone, but silence traded against sound. She pictured it. She could start soft, pull them down into the quiet, then lift her voice sudden and bright before dropping them again. Surprise, not stillness. The same voice, used a new way. "I need to practice," Melody said. "Right now." They slipped behind the stage. Melody sang her first verse soft, the way she always had. Then she snapped the note loud on the last word. The parrot flapped back, startled, then laughed. She dropped to a whisper again. The starfish leaned in without meaning to. She stretched the quiet long, longer, until it ached, then broke it with one high note. The salamander's orange eyes went wide. "That," the parrot said. "They won't see it coming." The organizer called her name. Melody walked back onto the exposed stage. The crowd waited, already expecting the hush. She gave it to them. She sang so soft they held their breath. She let the quiet grow until it hurt. Then she cracked it open with a bright, sudden note, and the crowd gasped. She pulled them down, lifted them up, down again. They swayed with her, not just still but caught. When she landed the last note, the cheers came louder than before. Melody stepped back, breathing hard. She had found a second way in. But as she looked at the judges' table, she saw one act left to perform. And from the wings came a sound she had not heard yet, a voice big enough to fill the whole cay.
