Chapter 3

Melody stood at the fork with the jar burning warm against their ribs. Each swallowed breath added weight. The glass had gone from cool to hot in ten paces. A hairline crack ran along the shoulder of the jar, thin as a spider leg. If the jar burst here, every stolen footstep and heartbeat would spill at once, and the fairy mark at the door would wake and name them. They needed a place to pour the sound. Not into the warm passage on the right, where the tyrant kept his hoard. Any noise there would ring against a thousand other jars and give him a chord to follow. The left passage breathed cold. Cold meant open. Cold meant a way to the surface. Melody turned left and walked fast. The crack in the jar lengthened. They counted twenty paces, thirty, and the tunnel opened into a small chamber lit by a slit of daylight above. A garden grew under the slit. Pale carrots with glowing roots pushed through the dirt. Beyond them a cluster of bright blossoms bent under the weight of butterflies that should not live underground. Someone tended this place. Someone fed on what the tyrant did not know he grew. At the far wall stood a small mushroom hut carved into the stone, its door no taller than Melody's knee. A bunny shape sat on the threshold, black and long-eared, the same shape from the tree line. It watched. It did not move. Melody understood the bargain being offered without a word passing. Pour the sound into the garden. The garden would eat it. Melody knelt. They set the theremin on the dirt and reversed the antennae, aiming the near one at the jar and the far one at the flower patch. Their hands shook. They turned the dial one notch, then another. The jar's crack widened. Melody twisted the last dial and the sound poured out backward, a soundless rush that bent the carrot tops flat and made the butterflies rise in a single sheet. The blossoms swelled. The petals opened wider. The jar emptied and cooled in their palm. The bunny shape stood. Behind it, in the low door of the hut, another figure appeared, tall and crowned in dark thorns, green eyes level with Melody's. She did not speak. She held out one long hand, palm up, and waited. Melody set a single pale carrot in her palm, the way a person pays a toll. She closed her fingers. The door shut. The garden went still. Melody stood with an empty jar and a working theremin and a way back to the fork. The tyrant had not heard them. But the crowned woman had, and now she knew a thief was in the tunnels below her garden, and she had accepted a first payment. Melody turned toward the warm passage. The hoard was that way. So was the next price.
