Chapter 9

Melody stepped out of the dry mouth and into the hoard. The chamber opened wide under a low roof. Jars stood in rows on stone shelves, hundreds of them, each one humming a scrap of stolen sound. Some held wind. Some held water. Some held a bird note stretched thin. The killing jar sat squat near the entrance, black and airless. Melody held their breath and walked around it, iron box tight under one arm, drum slung at their hip. The tall rabbit stopped at the threshold. He would not cross. "Break what you can on the way out," he said, and slipped back into the dark. Melody stood alone with the shelves. Every jar looked the same. Grab wrong and the forest at home stayed silent forever. There was no time to open each one and listen. The collector was walking. The night was burning. A soft tap came from behind the farthest shelf. Then another. Steady. Slow. Melody moved toward it. A gray rabbit sat cross-legged on the floor with a round pale drum across her lap. Moon marks ringed its face. She struck it once with the flat of her paw and looked up. "You are the listener," she said. "I am fading. I came to be heard before I go." Melody knelt. "I need to find my forest's echoes. There are too many jars." The rabbit tapped the drum again. "Every sound has a home," she said. "A home knows its own beat. Play your ground. The jars that belong to it will answer." She held out the drum. Melody took it. It was warmer than it looked. "Strike what your forest floor sounds like," she said. "Rain on leaf. Root under foot. Do it now." Melody set the moon drum on their knee and struck it. Once for the soft rain. Twice for the deep root. A pause. Then the pattern their feet had walked ten thousand times at home. Along the shelves, jars began to shiver. Not all of them. Maybe thirty. Maybe forty. They rattled in place, lids humming, glass ticking against stone. The rest sat still. Melody moved down the row and pulled every shivering jar into their pack, quick and careful, one by one. The killing jar did not stir. The stolen forest answered its own name. Melody shouldered the pack full of trembling glass. The gray rabbit's outline had already gone thin. "Heard," she said, and the drum in Melody's hands felt lighter, as if some weight had passed out of it. Behind them, a shape moved in the dry tunnel. Heavy. Certain. The collector, walking in. Ahead, deeper in the hoard, a slow dragging step began, and a cold voice hummed one note that shook every remaining jar on the shelves. The tyrant knew he had a thief.
