Chapter 1

Mia Lytte counted the money on her kitchen counter for the third time. Sixty-two dollars. The tournament entry fee was three hundred. She needed to win that tournament, and she'd never thrown a real punch in her life. But the prize could change everything, and losing wasn't the part that scared her. Getting turned away at the door before she even fought — that scared her. Her studio apartment was too small to hide from the problem. The bills sat on the windowsill by the big windows. Rent. Power. The sink still dripped in the kitchen corner. She'd signed up for the tournament on a wild, stubborn feeling, the kind her friends always warned her about. Now the deadline was two days away, and stubborn didn't pay fees. She pulled on her uniform and went to work. The cafe glowed pink and pastel, bunny ears mounted over every doorway. Mia tied on her own headband and forced a bright smile. She carried trays of tea and cupcakes while grown adults cooed at her costume. It was embarrassing. It also paid, barely. Between tables, she did math in her head. Two days of tips wouldn't close the gap. She thought about begging her boss for an advance. She thought about selling the one nice jacket she owned. Neither would reach three hundred in time. Then a regular caught her sleeve. He came in most mornings and always ordered the same green tea. Today he pointed at her flexed arm, half joking. "You know they run a cash prize for the amateur bracket qualifier tonight, right? Fifty bucks a head. Winner clears three hundred." Mia set down her tray. "Tonight." "Downstairs at the gym. Anybody can enter." He shrugged and sipped. "Most people lose the first round." She did the math again, faster this time. Fifty dollars to enter. She had sixty-two. If she won, she'd have exactly enough for the real tournament fee. If she lost, she'd have twelve dollars and no way in. Her shift ended at six. She untied the bunny ears, changed in the back, and walked to the gym with her whole savings in her pocket. The qualifier room smelled like sweat and rubber mats. The other fighters wrapped their hands and stretched like they'd done this a hundred times. Mia had watched exactly nine videos. She paid her fifty dollars. Her hands shook signing the sheet. The first two matches went to strangers. Then someone called her name. Mia stepped onto the mat, heart slamming, and remembered one thing from the videos: keep your hands up. Her opponent rushed her. Mia ducked on pure instinct, slipped, and shoved with everything she had. The girl stumbled off the mat. The referee called it. She won. Three rounds, three lucky wins, and the official counted three hundred dollars into her palm. Mia had her entry fee now. She also had a bracket slot in a fight she barely survived winning by accident. The real tournament started in a week, and everyone there would know how to throw a punch.
