Chapter 4

The crowd thinned as sirens swallowed the block. Mika kept her camera rolling until the last phone lowered, then walked away with her hands still shaking. She needed somewhere empty. She needed her sequence to feel like hers again. She found it behind a tall glass apartment tower, in the gravel lot where no one ever looked up. She set her phone on a low wall and started the count. One. Two. Pivot. Block. Step through. By move five, her foot landed near a deep print pressed into the concrete, and her body knew the shape before her brain did. The pivot was her mother's pivot. The lifted arms were her mother's arms. Mika dug into her jacket pocket and pulled out the folded Polaroid she carried everywhere—a little girl in a yellow dress, mid-twirl, laughing. Six years old. Her mother behind the camera, teaching her how to spin without falling. Mika had told everyone online she built the sequence from combat theory. She had built it from a dance her mother taught her before she left. Mika sat down on the gravel. She did not cry. She placed the Polaroid beside the cracked footprint and finished the sequence slowly, all seven moves, naming each one for what it really was. The choreography did not change. She did. Tomorrow she would still film it. Tonight, for the first time, she knew exactly what she was practicing.
