Chapter 1

Mildred Butterworth held a photograph an inch from her glasses and still could not see the face. The frame was warm from her hands. She knew the girls in the picture by memory, not sight. One of them had a voice she still heard in dreams, soft and low, singing near a river. Mildred could not remember the woman's face. She had spent sixty years trying. She only knew she wanted to hear that voice once more before she died. Her glasses were too big and slid down her nose. She pushed them up. The photo blurred worse in the dim room. She had lost these friends long ago, when letters stopped coming and addresses changed. She did not even know if they still lived. A knock came at the cottage door. The wooden boards were soft with age, and the sound rattled the whole frame. "It's me," a small voice called. Aj Blackbird stepped in without waiting. She was short, in a long black dress, with large sad eyes. She carried a bag of groceries in one arm and a striped gray cat balanced on the other. The cat wriggled. Aj held it like a child holds something precious. "I brought your milk," Aj said. "And this one followed me the whole way." She set the small cat on the floor. It walked straight to Mildred and pressed against her ankles. Mildred smiled. She loved this girl like a daughter. She had known Aj since Aj was small, and Aj had never once forgotten her. When the days felt heavy, Aj always came. "You're too good to me," Mildred said. She held out the photograph. "Come look. My eyes are gone. Can you see their faces?" Aj knelt and took the photo gently. She studied it a long moment. "Three young women by a river," she said. "One has a flower in her hair." Mildred's chest tightened. "That's her. That's the one I dream about." Her voice shook. "I want to find her. I don't know how. I can't see. I can't travel far." Aj turned the photo over. On the back, faded ink spelled a name and a town. She read it aloud, slow and careful. Mildred's hands went cold. "I never knew that was there," she whispered. "Sixty years. It was on the back the whole time." Aj looked up. "I could write to that town. Someone might know her." Mildred gripped the girl's hand. "You would do that?" "I'd give you the world," Aj said simply. She tucked the photo in her pocket. "I'll send a letter tomorrow." That night Mildred could not sleep. For the first time in sixty years, she had a name and a place. The dream voice felt closer now. But she knew the letter might come back empty, or worse, might bring news she could not bear.
