Chapter 1

Mildred Wilson had waited thirty-five years to learn her mother's name, and today the last door slammed shut. She stood outside the foster home that once held her file. A padlock hung on the gate. A paper sign read CLOSED. She pressed her forehead against the cold chain-link and swore under her breath. This was her fourth dead end. The first three homes had burned records, lost boxes, or turned her away. This one had kept a folder with a single line she needed: the woman who signed her over as a baby. She had grown up in these places, bounced between strangers, never knowing why. She had spent months chasing that name instead of a job. Two jobs, gone. Her friend Homer had once warned her she chased things too hard. He was right. A man loading a van told her the office had moved everything. "County took it," he said. "All the old paperwork. Try the records office downtown." Mildred didn't wait. She drove straight there. The building rose in pale stone, tall windows in neat rows, a carved name across the front: County Records Office. It looked serious and permanent, the opposite of every shut-down home she'd stood outside. Maybe permanent meant it kept things. Inside, a clerk behind a marble counter listened to her story. Mildred talked fast. She gave her full name, her birth year, the names of the homes. The clerk typed. The keyboard clicked. Mildred gripped the counter and prayed, the way she still did when she wanted something too much. "We do hold transferred foster files," the clerk said. Mildred's chest lifted. Then the woman frowned at her screen. "But sealed adoption and relinquishment records need a court order. I can't open the part with the birth parent's name. Not without a judge." "The name is the only thing I want," Mildred said. "I understand. It's the one part I can't give you." Mildred wanted to shout. Instead she made herself breathe. "Then what can you give me?" The clerk printed one page and slid it across. It listed Mildred's placements, dates, and a case number. At the bottom sat a name that wasn't her mother's: the caseworker who handled the relinquishment. A signature. Real. A person who had once held the file open and read the name aloud to no one. Mildred stared at the signature. The record itself was locked behind a court she couldn't afford to fight. But the person who wrote it might still be alive. Might remember. Might talk. She folded the page and put it in her pocket. The name on the paper wasn't the one she'd come for. It was the next door to knock on.
