Chapter 73

Mildred drove through the dark with the charm on the dashboard. Its blue stone still glowed, urgent and steady. The handler's warning burned in her mind. A summons for all three sisters, no reason given. She reached the estate before dawn and ran to the door. But the charm did not calm when she arrived. It pulled harder, toward a room she had not entered. Tessa met her in the hall, pale and rushed. "They took the papers into the steward's office," she said. "They won't let us see." The oldest sister stood by the window, still in her traveling coat. Mildred held up the shamrock. Its light bent toward the closed office door. "It's in there," she said. "Whatever's coming, it's already here." A clerk stepped out with a sealed folder. He would not meet her eyes. "The crown has filed a claim against your mother's coastal house," he said. "A dispute over the protected register. If no heir answers by noon, the property reverts." Mildred's stomach dropped. The charm had not warned of a summons. It had warned of a deadline she could still beat. She understood now. The charm never pointed to a place. It pointed to time. She had asked when, and it had answered. The danger was a clock, and the clock was still running. "We answer it," Mildred said. "All three of us. Right now." The oldest sister hesitated. "They'll bind me tighter to the crown." Mildred took her hand. "They can't. You signed the house into their register yourself. That makes you the heir of record. Their own rule protects it." She turned to the clerk. "Bring the register. We'll sign before noon." The clerk laid the book on the table. The oldest sister signed first, then Tessa, then Mildred. Three names, one line, exactly as their mother had planned. The clerk stamped the page and closed the folder. "The claim is answered," he said. "The house stays with the heirs." His voice was flat, but his hands shook. Mildred lifted the charm. The blue stone dimmed. The urgent pull faded to a soft, warm light, the way the old charm had glowed when a path ran true. She let out a long breath. For once she had not arrived too late. She had beaten the door before it closed. Tessa touched her arm. "How did you know the time?" Mildred looked at the shamrock in her palm. "It told me. Not where. When." She slipped it into her pocket. The house was safe. But the clerk's shaking hands stayed with her. He had known more than he said. The crown had reached for the house and lost. It would reach again, and next time the charm might not wake in time.
