Chapter 1

Millie wanted to make her father proud, but nobody would let her touch their car. She stood in his auto shop and saw why. Old parts covered every bench. A wall of stacked tires blocked the light. Grease stained the floor in wide dark streaks. Her father had run this shop for thirty years. Now he was too tired to lift a wrench. He had handed her the keys and one job: keep it alive. But a customer had walked in that morning, looked around, and walked right back out. Millie grabbed a broom. She could not fix the whole town's trust today. She could clean one shop. She hauled the tires outside and lined them by the wall. She swept the grease into a dustpan. She scrubbed the floor until her arms ached. She wiped the windows so light poured through the garage doors. By noon the front bay looked like a place a person could trust. Then an engine coughed in the lot. A small green car rolled up to the open door. It was old, from her grandfather's time, its paint faded but proud. Millie knew this car. Grampy had driven it her whole childhood. He climbed out slow and patted the hood like it was a horse. "She's making a noise I don't like," Grampy said. "Thought I'd give my girl a chance to prove herself." Millie's chest tightened. He was her first customer. Not a stranger, but family, and that felt heavier. If she failed on Grampy's car, word would spread fast in a town this small. "Bring her in," Millie said. "I'll take good care of her." She rolled the green car into the clean bay. She popped the hood and listened. The engine knocked, low and steady. She traced it to a loose belt and a cracked hose. Both simple. Both cheap. She worked for two hours, tightening and swapping parts. Her hands moved sure and quick. When she turned the key, the engine purred smooth. Grampy grinned. He paid her, then pressed an extra folded bill into her palm. "That's for the tip," he said. "And this is for the town." He nodded at the clean shop. "You made it shine. Folks will notice." He was right. As he drove off, a woman on the sidewalk stopped and stared through the bright windows. She had a car with a flat, she said. Could Millie look at it tomorrow? Millie said yes. She had earned her first real customer. But she had only one pair of hands and a shop full of tools she had not yet checked. Word was spreading now, and cars would come. She wondered if she could keep every promise she made.
