Chapter 1

Mirabel Fenwood knelt in the mud outside her hut, splinting a heron's wing. She had built this place to hold every hurt thing the swamp could send her, and she meant to keep building. A shadow fell across the water. She looked up. A creature crashed through the reeds and collapsed at her doorstep. It was scaled and winged, dragon-shaped but insect-jointed, its iridescent wings shredded and one flank split open. It hissed weakly. Mirabel set down her tools and breathed out slow. She had never turned anything away. She would not start now. The wound was too wide for her thread, the body too long for any room she had. She dragged it inside anyway, past the heron pens, into the small back room she still called her study. Dusty books, a cold lamp, a chair she hadn't sat in for two years. She cleared the desk with one arm. Pages fluttered to the floor. That part of her life was already over; she'd just been slow to admit it. The creature needed more space than the study could give. Mirabel went outside with her axe. Her garden — the wild tangle of flowering weeds she'd let grow because she liked looking at something useless and alive — would have to go. She tore out the trellis. She pulled vines from the stones. She cut the flowering arch down to its posts and carried the timber back inside, board by board. By dusk the study wall was gone. She had opened the room into the garden bed and roofed it with the trellis wood, packing the gaps with moss and clay from the bank. The creature lay stitched and breathing on a bed of torn vines. Above them both, the old oak at the edge of her clearing creaked in a wind that wasn't blowing, its bark faintly humming. Mirabel noticed. She filed it away for later. She sat down in the mud and looked at what she had done. The study was gone. The garden was gone. The hut had a new room shaped like a wound. Inside it, something impossible was sleeping, and she did not yet know what it would need when it woke.
