Chapter 1
Miriel Thornwood drove her knife into the pine, three days after her own people cast her out. Her plan was simple. She would build a home in these strange woods, high in the branches, hidden from the world. She had loved a human once, loved him with everything she had, and her people never forgave it. So she left. She would make peace here, and one day she would find a human to love again.
She cut notches for the first platform. The wood smelled sharp and clean. Her hands remembered the work even if her heart did not.
Then a man walked past on the road below.
He was a stranger, a trader hauling a full pack toward the frontier town where her lover was said to live. He did not look up. He did not speak. But Miriel stopped. She stared at his broad shoulders, his dark hair, until he vanished around the bend. Her knife hung idle in her hand.
Another man came an hour later. Then two more before noon. Each time she froze. Each time she saw the face of the human she had lost, and each time the man passed without a word, just going about his business. By dusk her platform was only half-built. She had wasted a whole day watching the road.
Night fell. The forest turned silver. Miriel sat alone with her failure, ashamed she had let strangers steal her focus.
Something sniffed at her boot.
A rabbit crouched in the moss, ears twitching. As the moon rose, the creature stretched and changed. Fur became pale hair. Small paws became hands. A girl with rabbit ears now knelt in the leaves, sniffing the air near Miriel's pile of cut wood.
"I don't remember you being here," the bunny girl said. She tilted her head and grinned. "Are you new to these woods?"
Miriel gripped her knife, then let it go. The girl looked harmless, only curious. "I am. I'm building a home. Or trying to." She nodded at the half-finished platform. "I keep stopping. Every time a man passes, I lose the whole afternoon."
The bunny girl crept closer and leaned against Miriel's arm, warm and easy, as if they had known each other for years. "That road is busy in daylight. But at night, nobody walks it. Only me."
Miriel looked at the moonlit branches. The girl was right. In the dark there were no traders, no faces to chase her memory. No one to distract her.
So she made a choice. She would sleep through the busy days and build through the quiet nights.
She stood and set her knife to the pine again. The bunny girl clapped and settled in to watch. By the time the moon climbed high, Miriel had finished the platform at last. Her home had its first floor. And she was not alone anymore.
