Chapter 3

The fire held. The room was warm. But when Misa stepped outside to shake snow from her cloak, she saw the problem plain. The lodge sat low against a slope, half-swallowed by drift. From ten paces off, it looked like a hill. From the road, it looked like nothing at all. A traveler could freeze within shouting distance and never guess a door was here. She came back in and stood by the hearth. Hades watched her from the mended bench. The fox spirit lifted its head, small symbols drifting from its tail. "They won't find it," Misa said. "Anyone who needs this place will walk right past." Hades looked at the fire. "Then it needs a sign." "Not a sign. A pull." She pressed her palm flat to the timber wall. Her tattoos warmed under her sleeve. She had ink she had never spent on anything larger than a page. She had a lodge with a hearth already breathing. She had someone across the room who fixed cracks without being asked. "I can try something," she said. "I'll need your hands." Hades stood. "Tell me where." Misa uncorked a small vial from her belt. Black ink threaded with green light coiled inside it like a living thing, tentacles curling against the glass. She had carried it two winters without a use worth the cost. She poured a drop onto her fingertip. The ink climbed her skin and settled into the raven on her shoulder, which shifted forward and stayed. Right, then. She pressed her inked hand to the doorframe and drew a line up the timber. The wood drank it. Hades followed her lead, palm flat where she pointed, holding the grain steady while she worked. She traced the beams. She traced the lintel. She traced a root-shape down into the floor, as if the lodge had been growing from something older all along. The timber warmed under their hands. Faint green veins bloomed along the walls and pulsed once, slow as a sleeper's breath. A soft lantern glow gathered at the windows. Above the door, letters rose in the wood without being carved: three words she did not choose and did not argue with. Mind Over Ink. Outside, the drift around the lodge sank. The roofline lifted clear of the snow. A warm square of window light spilled onto the path. Misa opened the door. She could see the shape of the road now, and the road could see her. "It's a tavern," Hades said, testing the word. "It's a place people can find," Misa said. The fox spirit trotted to the threshold and sat, tail curled over its paws, watching the dark. Down the slope, boots crunched snow. Someone was coming toward the light. They were still far off, and they were not walking straight.
