Chapter 9

The last traveler stumbled in behind Nivalis and the storm slammed the door for them. The lodge was warm and it was full. Misa counted twenty-three bodies in a room built for eight. Wet coats steamed on every hook. Children sat on the floor because there were no chairs left. Two trappers stood shoulder to shoulder near the hearth, not speaking, both watching the fire like it belonged to only one of them. A man near the window told the woman beside him she was crowding his pack. She told him to move his pack. Misa felt the shape of the next hour without needing to guess. "They'll fight before dawn," Hades said, low, at her shoulder. "Somebody's boot will touch somebody's child." "I know." Misa looked at the four beds through the doorway. Already claimed. Already argued over. "We need another room. A room that isn't for sleeping. Somewhere they can spread out." "We don't have one." She thought of the small glass shrine across the yard. Empty. Cold. Too far in this snow, and too small anyway. Then she thought of the space between it and the lodge — the flat ground where the fox had first led her. A yard. A gap. She pulled Hades toward the door. "Get Eira. Bring every blanket. Bring the kettles." Outside, the wind had dropped to a hush. Nivalis stood in the yard with the white stag, lantern low. Snow still refused to touch them. Misa walked up to the hood and the empty dark inside it. "I need a path between the lodge and the shrine," she said. "Wide enough for people to sit. Warm enough they'll stay." The hood tilted. "A bridge." "A room without walls." Nivalis lifted the lantern. Blue moonfire spilled down and set into the snow. Where the light touched, the drift compacted into pale stone. Timber the color of frost lifted underneath. Lanterns bloomed along a low rail, one after another, until an arched span stood between the lodge door and the shrine steps. Ice glazed it. The lanterns held steady in the wind. "It will last while I stand near it," Nivalis said. "No longer." "Then stand near it." Misa went back inside and opened both doors. She spoke plainly. There was a warm walk now, with lanterns. Anyone who wanted air, or quiet, or their own patch of blanket, could take it. The trappers went first. The woman with the pack followed. Eira carried a kettle out and set it on the rail. Mabel sent bread after her in a cloth. The children ran, then slowed, then sat on the stone and stared at the blue lights above them. The lodge emptied by half. The room breathed. No one shouted. Misa stood at the door and watched Nivalis at the far end of the span, patient as a post. She had bought the night. She had bought it against a guest who could walk away.
