Chapter 1

Missy knew the word "magnificent," but she could not remember how it sounded out loud. She stood on the sidewalk, mouthing it. "Mag... maj..." Her tongue tripped. She had a whole notebook of big words. She loved to collect them. She wanted to drop them into everyday talk, the way other kids dropped pennies in a fountain. But collecting words and saying them were two different things. That was her real trouble. Missy learned fancy words fast. She just had no one patient enough to practice with. Yesterday she'd tried "spectacular" on a boy at the pond. He'd walked off before she reached the middle. "Speck-tack—" she'd said, and he was gone. So the sounds slipped out of her head. A word she couldn't say out loud might as well not be hers at all. She pulled a small stack of flashcards from her pocket. Each one showed a picture with a word. She'd made harder ones herself, taping her big words over the easy ones. "Magnificent," said the card. A drawing of a mountain smiled up at her. Still, cards couldn't listen back. They couldn't tell her when she got it right. Then she saw the shop. A wooden building with a curved sign: Local Poetry Lounge. Warm light glowed behind the glass. Through the window she saw people at small tables, taking turns speaking. One would talk. The others would wait, quiet and kind, until the speaker finished. Nobody walked off. Nobody laughed. Missy pushed the red door open. A bell jingled. Faces turned, but they only nodded and made room. A woman near the front lifted her hand toward an empty chair. "We share words here," she said softly. "Take your time. That's the whole point." Missy's heart thumped. She sat. When her turn came, she stood and held up a card. "I found a word," she said. "It is... magnificent." She stopped. Her mouth shook. "Mag-nif-i-cent." She said it slow, one piece at a time. Nobody rushed her. Nobody left. A man at the back smiled. "Again," he said. "Louder." "Magnificent!" Missy said. The word came out whole. It sounded exactly like it looked on the card. The room clapped, soft and warm. She said it three more times, and each time it stayed in her mouth like it belonged there. By the end, Missy had said six of her big words out loud. Real people had listened to every one. "Come back tomorrow," the woman said. "We meet every day." Missy stepped outside, cards clutched tight. She finally had a place to practice. But she wanted more than practice now. She wanted to use her words out in the wide world, with regular people who wouldn't wait. The lounge was safe. The sidewalk was not. She would have to learn the difference, and soon.
