Chapter 2

The cracked marker had done more than break. Mori's fire had torn a seam across the night sky, and something had climbed down through it. Now a beast prowled the crater's rim. It moved like a whale that had learned to walk on air, its dark hide flecked with cold points of light. Every night it circled closer to the throne. Mori could not raise a spark without it turning its wide, star-marked head toward him. He stood at the crater's edge and watched it drift between the broken walls. He could not practice while it hunted here. Two men waited behind him. Enzo had come first, a wandering scholar who claimed to be older than the crater itself. His robe glinted with painted stars, and he spoke of the beast the way a farmer speaks of weather. Beside him stood Cassian, small and wrapped in a ragged veil, his eyes white and blind. The veiled oracle had once touched the void and come back changed. He had shared calming rites no other star-cult would speak aloud. "It followed your fire down," Enzo said. "A creature like that hunts what called it. You called it. So it will not leave while your power burns." "Then I stop burning?" Mori asked. "You quiet it," Cassian said. His voice was thin and flat. "A star-thing does not fear force. It fears stillness. Empty your fire into the stone, all of it, until nothing calls to it. Then hold that emptiness." Mori doubted a man could empty himself on command. But the beast was drifting lower now, close enough that its light washed the crater floor pale. He knelt and set both palms on the last unbroken marker. Enzo raised his hands and traced a slow shape in the air. "I will bind it in place. Not for long. You must be quiet before I fail." The scholar's fingers glowed. The beast slowed, snared in the shimmer, thrashing against nothing. Mori pushed his fire down into the stone. Cassian began to chant, low and steady, and Mori matched his breath to it. He poured every thread of power out of himself and into the marker. The stone drank it. His chest went cold and hollow. For the first time, he felt truly empty. The beast stopped thrashing. It hung in the air, searching. It found no fire in Mori, nothing to hunt. Slowly it turned and swam back up toward the torn seam. The light of it thinned, then vanished. The sky knit shut. Enzo dropped his hands and sagged. "Gone." Mori looked down. The marker had not cracked this time. It held his fire and glowed steady, warm under his palms. But it was only stone. Cassian pressed a cold finger to Mori's chest, where the emptiness still sat. "You can command the void now," the oracle said. "But a star will fill that hollow to bursting. Empty is not enough. You need a vessel that lives."
