Chapter 1

Mrs Rosewood had said the word "kindness" nine times, and not one child was listening. She stood at the front of her pastel classroom in her white dress with pink stripes, and watched two boys flick paper at a smaller girl. The girl stared at her desk. Mrs Rosewood raised her voice about treating others gently. The boys laughed harder. Her whole reason for teaching was this: no child bullied, no child left out. Yet her lectures bounced off them like the paper wads bounced off that girl's back. She kept them after the bell. "Do you know how she felt?" she asked the boys. They shrugged. She talked about feelings for ten minutes. Their eyes drifted to the clock. When she finished, they mumbled sorry and ran out. By morning, the girl sat alone again. Mrs Rosewood pressed her hands flat on her desk. Words weren't working. Something in her chest went tight and sure. She needed to make them feel it, not hear it. That afternoon she walked to the art tower at the edge of Chibi City. Rapunzel taught painting there two days a week. Mrs Rosewood had watched her students leave those classes changed, quieter, prouder. She climbed the spiral stairs and found Rapunzel wiping green paint from her hands. A chameleon perched on a windowsill, tail curled. "My students won't listen when I tell them to be kind," Mrs Rosewood said. "I've tried everything I know how to say." Rapunzel set down her rag. "Then stop saying it." She looked at the murals covering her walls. "I painted alone in here for years. Nobody saw it. It meant nothing until someone stood where you're standing and felt something." She met Mrs Rosewood's eyes. "You can't hand a feeling over in a sentence. You have to build a place where it happens to them." Mrs Rosewood thought of the girl at the empty desk. "Would you help me?" "Bring them here," Rapunzel said. "Give each child one wall. Make them paint what it feels like to be left out. Then make them paint it for each other." The next morning Mrs Rosewood didn't lecture. She led her class up the tower stairs and handed out brushes. She paired the two boys with the small girl. "Paint her a wall," she said. "Show her she belongs here." The boys started slow, unsure. Then the girl laughed at a lopsided sun one of them made, and he grinned. By noon the three of them shared one paint cup, arguing over colors like friends. Mrs Rosewood watched from the stairs, and for the first time her chest felt light. She had stopped talking, and something had finally moved. But three children were not thirty. As the class filed out, she noticed a fourth child hanging back, arms crossed, watching the painters with a hard, jealous look she had never seen on him before.
