Mungo returned to the village the next morning with a plan. He needed workers to clear the site, prepare the foundation, and make the mushroom presentable. Simple enough for a chef of his reputation—offer good wages, promise a meal or two, and the job would be done by week's end. But the villagers backed away when he mentioned the location. They refused to go anywhere near the giant mushroom, their faces pale with fear. One woman pointed to the crude wooden fence they'd built around it, warning others to stay clear. Another showed him a strange metal helmet, engraved with protective symbols, which they wore whenever forced to pass nearby. The mushroom devours those who disturb it, they insisted. Three people had vanished last autumn. No bodies. No trace. Mungo laughed at first, calling it superstition. But when he offered triple wages, not a single hand went up. He tried reasoning with them, explaining that mushrooms were his specialty, that he knew every variety in Mirkwood. They just shook their heads and walked away. The massive red-capped mushroom with its skull-like face might terrify them, but to Mungo it was simply an impressive specimen. Still, standing alone at the fence line that evening, staring at those hollow eyes and jagged teeth carved into the fungal flesh, he felt his confidence waver. He would have to clear the site himself. The realization settled over him like cold water. No workers meant slower progress, harder labor, and more time before his inn could open. But Mungo Underbough hadn't built his reputation by backing down from challenges. He returned to the village and bought an axe, rope, and clearing tools. If the villagers wouldn't help, he'd prove their fears were nothing but tales. And when his inn stood completed around that remarkable mushroom, they'd see what a real chef could accomplish.
