Chapter 1

Mycel kneels beside the root network, brushing soil from a fungal thread as thin as hair. The work is slow and careful. Their fingers press nutrients into the ground, feeding what remains of the healthy patches. A traveler stands on the path behind them, watching. The traveler has been there for days now, silent, unmoving. Mycel does not look up. They have learned that attention changes nothing. The traveler will either stay on the path or step off it, and Mycel's gaze will not tip the balance either way. So they work. They measure moisture levels in the soil. They check for new growth in the network. The traveler shifts weight from one foot to the other but does not speak. Mycel moves to the next section, a patch where the roots still reach deep enough to matter. This is what peace looks like now: work that can still be done, and a traveler who has not yet destroyed it. The baby mushrooms have begun to fruit along the path's edge. Mycel planted them three weeks ago in soil they'd carried from the northern reach. Small caps push through the dark earth, cream-colored and delicate. They form a living border between the path and the deeper ground beyond. The traveler steps forward. Mycel's hand freezes in the soil. But the traveler only crouches at the path's edge, eyes on the mushrooms. They do not reach out. They do not step off. After a long moment, the traveler pulls a silver watch from their pocket and sets it on the path stones. Then they stand and walk away, their boots staying on the worn surface until they disappear over the ridge. Mycel looks at the watch, then at the mushrooms still standing. Something small has shifted. Not hope, but a different kind of stillness. Mycel sits back on their heels and watches the empty path. The watch lies where the traveler left it, catching late sun on its silver case. They do not touch it. The mushrooms near their knee are already spreading spores into the protected soil. In four days, a traveler stayed and did no harm. In four days, a traveler looked at the work and saw it. Mycel returns to the fungal threads, fingers working the earth with steady pressure. The path is quiet now. The ground beneath their hands is still alive. This is not victory, but it is not loss either. It is enough to keep working. The patchwork shelter sits a few steps down the path where the traveler stayed. Mycel can see it from here, its worn fabrics bright against the gray sky. The traveler built it without leaving the path, stones placed carefully on the path's edge. They watched for four days and left without damage. Mycel lifts a handful of soil and spreads it over the newest fungal threads. The mushrooms will grow stronger now. The roots will reach deeper. One traveler saw the work and chose to do no harm. Mycel knows this changes nothing about what comes next. But today, the ground is healthier than yesterday. Today, someone watched and stayed on the path. That is enough.
