Nella Voss had been in the city three days when she found the shop with the golden windows. A hand-lettered sign in the door read: room upstairs, ask inside. The owner was an older woman stacking jars of honey behind the counter. She looked at Nella's small bag, at her scuffed boots, and at the notebook tucked under one arm. She said Nella could have the room if she kept the kettle warm through the afternoon and watched the shop at dusk while the owner walked her dog. Nella agreed before she thought about it. She had spent a year moving from town to town, writing down things that felt kind, waiting for a place that felt like enough. The stairs creaked under her as she climbed for the first time. She counted seven steps. She wrote that down. The room was almost empty. A bed frame, a chair, a window facing east. Nella opened the window and heard dogs barking somewhere far off, then a tram bell, then nothing. Downstairs, she swept the floor and refilled the kettle and stood behind the counter as the light turned orange on the shelves. A boy came in for bread. A woman bought a candle and said thank you twice. When the owner returned, she nodded once at the clean floor and warm kettle and handed Nella a key. Upstairs again, Nella sat on the bed with her notebook open. She wrote: The shop has a warm window. The stairs creak in the same place going up and coming down. Some places feel safe before anyone explains why. Then she closed the book, and stayed.
