Chapter 1

Neville Hatch could recite ten thousand orders, but he could not name the man who built him. The clockwork steward stood in his narrow quarters and let the brass drum on his back spin through its records. Fetch the tea. Press the gray coat. Wind the hall clock at dusk. Each command played back in a borrowed voice, perfect and useless. None of them belonged to his maker. Neville wanted one thing above all: to find the inventor who first turned his key, and ask why he was built to forget nothing. He had searched the drum for years. The oldest recordings crackled but held no maker's name. So Neville changed his plan. If the drum would not tell him, perhaps the hands that built the drum had left other marks. He opened the panel on his own back. Inside, past the spinning cylinder, something stirred. A small mechanical beetle crawled free. Its metal plates shone with dark oil. Exposed gears ticked along its spine, and one glass eye glowed pink. Neville had carried it his whole life and never known. The beetle climbed his sleeve and stopped on his wrist. Its legs tapped a steady rhythm against his brass knuckles. Tap. Tap-tap. Pause. Not random. A pattern. Neville held still and counted. The taps matched the oldest groove on his drum, the one he could never read. The beetle was a key, not a pet. His maker had hidden a second record inside a machine too small to search. Neville pressed the beetle gently against the drum's starting notch. The gears caught. The cylinder turned backward for the first time. A new voice came through, rough and tired, nothing like the masters Neville had served. "If you are hearing this, old friend, then you went looking." Neville's hands shook. The voice was his maker. "I built you to remember because I could not. My own mind was failing. You are everything I was afraid to lose." The recording paused, then gave one last line. "Find me at the house with the green door, below the hill. If I still know your face, I will be glad." The beetle went quiet. The drum clicked shut. Neville stood alone, holding the small machine in his palm. He finally had a voice, a reason, and a place. But the voice spoke of a failing mind. His maker might not know him now. The man who built Neville to remember everything had begged to be remembered himself. Neville set the beetle on his shoulder. He pressed his coat flat, straightened his collar, and opened the door. For the first time, he walked out with a destination of his own choosing. The house with the green door waited below the hill, and Neville did not know if the man inside would still call him friend.
