Chapter 1

Noah could sell a stranger a sunset, but he could not raise a wall. He stood in the cold shell of his family's homestead and stared at three logs he had wrestled into place all morning. The fourth would not sit. He shoved it. It slid off and cracked against his shin. He wanted this place finished by summer, full of guests who would never want to leave. Right now it could not house one. He had spent years talking people into things. Charm came easy. A slow smile, a warm question, and strangers trusted him inside a minute. But charm did not square a beam or level a floor. The main house had no roof over the far room. Rain had swelled the boards. His plans were sketches and promises, nothing a person could sleep in. Noah wiped his hands and walked the property, hunting for anything already sound. Behind the tall grass he found it. A small cabin house, low and square, built by someone before him who knew the work. The shingles held. The logs sat tight and true. A green trim ran along the roof edge, faded but whole. He pushed the door. It swung clean on its hinges. Inside, dust floated in the light. One room. A wood stove. Two windows that still had glass. He turned in a slow circle and did the math he had been avoiding. He could not fix the main house alone before the season. But this cabin needed only sweeping, a scrub, and firewood. It could hold guests now. That changed everything and cost him something too. He had pictured guests waking in the grand lodge, coffee in the common room, the whole homestead alive. This cabin sat two. Maybe three if someone slept by the stove. His dream shrank to fit one small room. Noah dropped his tools by the main house and hauled his cot into the cabin. He swept the floor until his arms ached. He split enough wood to last a week and stacked it by the door. By dusk the stove threw real heat. The windows glowed. For the first time, part of the homestead looked like a place a person would choose to stay. He sat on the step and pulled out his phone. He had a mailing list from every retreat he had ever run, hundreds of names who liked his voice. He wrote the words he was good at. A cabin in the woods. A quiet weekend. Come first, see the rest as it grows. He could fill this small room easily. He knew that. He sent it before he could think twice. Within an hour, four replies came in. Then a fifth. They wanted dates. They wanted next weekend. Noah stared at the screen. He had guests now, and one clean room to put them in. But five people were coming to a homestead that was still a mud lot, a broken house, and one small cabin. He had sold the dream. Now he had days to make it hold.
