Chapter 1

Noah Vale counted streets to stay sane. He walked the same route through Vesper City every night, past the same shops, the same cracked curbs. He counted them because he was the only one who noticed when they changed. Every midnight, the world rewrote itself, and everyone forgot. Everyone but him. All he wanted was one night where nothing moved, where he could stop watching and just breathe. Tonight there were forty-one storefronts on his walk. He knew because he counted them yesterday. He knew there should be forty-two. The clock tower in the square began to strike midnight. Its face never moved, frozen at 11:59, but the bells rang anyway. Noah stopped and watched the street ahead. On the twelfth bell, it happened. A whole street folded out of the world. One second there were lit windows and a bakery sign. The next, brick wall stood where the street had been. No sound. No dust. Just gone. A couple walked past the new wall without slowing. A man crossed where the street used to open. Noah grabbed his sleeve. "There was a street here," Noah said. "A bakery. You bought bread there." The man pulled free and frowned like Noah was drunk. He walked on and forgot in three steps. Noah pressed his hand to the cold brick. His heart slammed. He had watched this a hundred times, but he had never seen a whole street vanish at once. It was getting worse. Faster. He thought of Jace, who noticed missing buildings but always laughed it off. Nobody stayed scared but Noah. "You remember too, don't you?" The voice came from behind him. A girl stood under the dead streetlight. Long dark hair. Pale skin. A striped shirt over a black skirt, silver rings on her fingers. Her eyes caught the light strangely, like they held more than the dark. Noah had never seen her before. But she watched him the way you watch an old friend. "I don't know you," Noah said. His hand stayed on the wall. "Mara." She stepped closer, easy and unhurried. "And you keep touching that wall like it'll open again. It won't. Not till the next one." She smiled. "You count the streets. I've watched you do it for three worlds now." Noah's stomach dropped. Nobody knew he counted. Nobody could know. "How do you remember?" "Same as you." She tilted her head. "But I know something you don't. I know why it's happening." She let that sit. "You've spent your whole life trying to trust nothing. I'm about to make that very hard." Noah stared at her. For years he had wanted one thing: a normal life, a world that held still. Now the only person who shared his curse stood in front of him, holding the answer he'd been chasing. "Then tell me," he said. Mara turned and started walking into the dark. "Not here. Walk with me. Before it changes again." Noah followed.
