Chapter 1

Nova blackish had rehearsed the word baby for six months and still could not say it aloud. She stood at the front window of the red house they rented at the edge of the permafrost, watching Brock green stack seal oil crates into the sled. He was leaving for the northern route in two days. Last night he had told her, casual as weather, that he'd signed a second winter contract. Two more years of ice work. Two more years of empty rooms. She pressed her palm flat to the cold glass and felt the answer she had been avoiding: if she did not speak now, he would keep building a life shaped like a bachelor's. She walked out to the sled in her brother Collin's old parka. Brock looked up, grinning, cheeks pink from the wind, blond hair stuck to his forehead. She asked him to come inside. He wiped his gloves on his jeans and followed. In the kitchen she poured coffee she did not drink. Then she said it plainly. She wanted a child. She wanted the big house three lots over, the one with the wide porch and the double chimneys, the one they walked past every Sunday. She wanted him to stop signing contracts that took him away. Her voice shook once and then held. Brock set his mug down. He did not speak for a long moment, and she watched his face move through surprise, calculation, and something softer. He said he had thought she wanted the quiet life they already had. He said he had signed the second contract because he assumed she would leave him if he stopped bringing money. Then he asked her, careful, if she meant this year. She said yes. She said before another winter passed. He pulled the folded contract from his coat pocket and laid it on the table between them. He tore it in half. He told her he would speak to the foreman in the morning and take the shorter local route instead. He said the big house had been for sale since autumn and he had already asked the price once, on a walk she did not know about. Nova laughed, then cried, then laughed again. Outside, the sled sat half-loaded in the blue afternoon light. Inside, for the first time, they spoke about names, and about how many rooms they would need, and about who would tell Collin first. Nothing was bought yet. Nothing was built. But the silence she had carried for six months was gone, and in its place sat a plain, shared plan, and the harder problems it would bring.
