Chapter 1

Nyx Evenfall woke on hot rock, and the last thing they could remember was a night with no shape to it. No name for the night. No name for the fear still knotted in their chest. Only the certainty that something had happened, and that they needed to know what. The sun sat low and white above the flat mesa. Their tongue was dry stone. No water. No shade. Nothing but cracked ground in every direction. Nyx sat up too fast. The world tilted. They pressed their palms to the rock and waited for it to steady. Sweat had already dried on their neck. That meant hours gone, maybe more. A person could not last a day out here. They knew that fact without knowing how they knew it. They stood and turned in a slow circle. Then they saw it. Far off, a shape rested against the horizon. Not a rock. It had the wrong lines, too tall and too clean. A structure. A small building, weathered and squat, with a flat roof and a stubborn silhouette. Nyx started walking. The heat pressed down like a hand. Each breath scraped. They fixed their eyes on the little building and refused to look away. Twice their knees buckled. Twice they got up. The sun climbed higher and burned the back of their neck. Something passed over them. A shadow slid across the ground, wide and fast. Nyx dropped low and looked up. A lion circled the sky above them. Gold fur, dark mane, and two great feathered wings that beat slow and steady. It should not exist. It flew anyway. The creature banked and glided ahead, toward the weathered building, then swung back, as if measuring them. Nyx froze. The winged lion did not dive. It hung in the air a moment longer, then turned and flew straight for the structure, wings flashing. It landed on the flat roof and folded its wings. It watched Nyx with steady eyes. Waiting. Nyx understood the choice. Follow the impossible animal, or die on open rock. Their legs were already moving. The last stretch felt endless. The building grew until Nyx could see the gray patches nailed over its wooden walls and the heavy door. Nyx reached the door and shoved it open. Cool dark swallowed the heat. Inside stood a narrow room built for one person to live in. A wide bed sofa filled one corner. A small sink and stove lined the wall. A shower and toilet stood behind a thin partition. Nyx stumbled to the sink and twisted the tap. Water ran. Real water. They drank until their stomach hurt, then splashed their face and gripped the counter, shaking. Above them, faint on the roof, they heard the scrape of claws and the shift of great wings settling. The desert had not killed them. But someone had known Nyx would come here. Someone had left this place ready. Nyx did not know who. They meant to find out.
