Chapter 1
Ocean Love wanted the throne of Paradise Peace, and today the nobles would decide whether she deserved a voice at all. She stood at the gates of the shimmering castle, watching lords stride past her toward the glowing marble hall. None looked at her. She owned no seat inside that court. Without one, her claim was only a rumor whispered in her own manor.
She had ruled her house well. The velvet drapery over her home hung deep red and green, and every servant she kept had chosen to stay. She fed the hungry at her door. She settled quarrels with patience, not with guards. But kindness bought no chair among the nobles. They rewarded gold, blood, and old favors.
A steward blocked the castle door. "Only seated lords enter," he said. "You hold no seat."
"Then tell me how to earn one," Ocean Love said.
He almost smiled. "The court seats those who bring it something it cannot ignore. Beauty. Wealth. Loyalty it can count." He waved her back toward the road.
Ocean Love walked home through the shining grove, where the trees glowed and sparkled overhead. She sat beneath them and thought. She had no army. She had no chest of gold to rival the great houses. But she had spent years being kind to small and strange creatures, and they had never forgotten it.
She raised her hand. A cluster of purple butterflies drifted down from the branches, wings talking with soft, bright voices. Behind them came the tiny black fairies with glowing wings, the ones she had sheltered when hunters burned their hollow. They circled her shoulders, waiting.
"I need to be seen," she told them. "The court will not open its door. So we will make a door they cannot shut."
The next morning, the nobles gathered in the glowing hall. The doors stayed sealed against Ocean Love. Then the purple butterflies poured through the high windows in a living ribbon. The fairies followed, their wings scattering colored light across the marble. The court froze. Lords rose from their chairs. No noble commanded such creatures. No noble ever had.
The butterflies formed a bright arch above the empty center of the hall. Through the open doors walked Ocean Love, slow and calm, the fairies bright around her crown. The steward moved to stop her and then did not.
"You said the court seats those it cannot ignore," she said. "Ignore this."
The eldest noble stared at the swarm, then at her steady face. He struck his staff against the glowing floor. "Let her stand among us," he said. "We will hear her."
A chair was carried in and set at the far edge of the ring. It was the lowest seat, cramped between two rivals who already hated the sight of her. But it was a seat. Ocean Love sat, folded her hands, and smiled warmly at every lord who now had to listen. She had a voice in the court at last. Now she had to survive the enemies who had just learned to fear her.
