Chapter 8

Olivia stood at the bottom of the tavern stairs in the floral dress and red jacket. Ty was late, and she had no idea where he meant to take her. Dinner could mean a candlelit table or a curb outside a burger stand. The dress was too short for one and too fancy for the other. She smoothed the hem and worried she had guessed wrong. Then a truck rumbled up outside. Ty pushed through the door. He wore a clean shirt with the sleeves cut off, tattoos dark down both arms. He stopped when he saw her. For a second he said nothing. "You look good," he said. Then, "Come on. You'll want your legs free for what I've got planned." She followed him out, nerves humming. But he drove them to a diner with cracked booths and a jukebox in the corner. No candles. No white tablecloth. Just the smell of grease and the buzz of a neon sign. Olivia laughed, half from relief. "This is where you take a girl in a leather jacket?" "It's where I take you," Ty said. He slid into the booth across from her. He ordered two burgers and one shake, two straws. He didn't ask if she wanted to share. He just knew. They ate. He talked more than she expected, in his short flat way, but she learned to read the spaces between his words. She told him about her grandmother's greenhouse, the collapsed roof, the months she owed Ryan. He didn't flinch at his brother's name. "He'll finish it," Ty said. "I made sure." After the plates were cleared, he pulled her toward a pool table in the back. He racked the balls and handed her a cue. She missed her first three shots and he didn't laugh at her. He stood behind her, guided her hands, and she sank the next one clean. She whooped. He almost smiled. By the second game she was laughing so hard her stomach hurt. She hadn't laughed like this since her mother passed. She stopped and looked at him across the green felt. This quiet man had done it. He had pulled the sound out of her without trying. When he drove her back, she stayed in the truck a moment before getting out. "The dress was too much," she said. "For a diner." "No," Ty said. "It was right." He looked at her longer than he needed to. Olivia climbed the stairs and hung the red jacket on the door. She still didn't know when the greenhouse would stand or how she'd pay for it. But something had shifted. For the first time she could picture the finished glass, the vines cleared, herself standing under a mended roof in a dress. And beside her, blurred but real, a man who shared his shake without asking. She had come home with more than a good night. She had come home with hope.
