Chapter 1

Orion stood in his cellar and studied the wine that refused to be finished. The liquid gleamed with captured starlight, almost right but not quite. He had brewed it to show mortals what they couldn't see in themselves — their true shapes, their real natures. Something was missing. He just didn't know what. Footsteps echoed from the stairs above. A mortal girl stumbled into view, eyes wide, drawn by the light. She reached for the nearest vessel before Orion could speak. The wine touched her lips. Her body began to shift, bones lengthening, skin darkening to midnight blue. Wings burst from her shoulders in a spray of starlight. Within moments, a winged horse stood where the girl had been, coat gleaming with tiny stars, eyes bright with recognition. She looked at Orion, then at her own transformed body, and he saw understanding pass across her face. The wine worked. But it didn't reveal her nature — it forced a shape onto her, trapping her in a form she might not choose. That was the problem. The wine needed her consent, her willingness to see. Without that, it was just another cage. Orion knelt beside the creature and placed his hand on her neck. The stars in her coat pulsed beneath his palm. He could undo this. But first he needed to understand what she felt. The pegasus stamped once, twice, then lowered her head and nickered softly. Her starlit eyes held no fear, no anger. Only curiosity. She stepped toward the cauldron and looked back at him as if asking a question. Orion felt something shift in his chest. The missing piece wasn't an ingredient. It was choice. The wine had to offer, not command. He stood and walked to the cauldron, watching the galaxies swirl inside. He knew what to do now. He touched the wine's surface with one finger. Light rippled outward. The pegasus shimmered, then the girl stood there again, breathing hard. She stared at her hands, then at him. "What was I?" she whispered. Orion gestured toward the entrance where the green crystal cast its glow down the stairs. "Go," he said. "And forget this." But she didn't move. She looked at the cauldron, at the wine that had shown her something she'd never imagined about herself. "Can I come back?" she asked. Orion watched her face, saw the hunger there to understand what she'd felt. He nodded once. After she left, he returned to his work with new purpose. The wine would ask permission next time. It would wait for yes.
