Chapter 1

Parker Kaz wanted every purse in Skaldir emptied at his feet, and every man in the tavern trembling when he entered. Tonight he got neither. He set his silver-tipped cane against the bar, ordered wine, and told the merchant beside him to hand over his coin. The merchant laughed. So did three others. "Who are you?" the merchant asked, wiping his beard. Parker had no answer that carried weight. No one had heard his name. A name people feared was the only thing that could bend a room, and he owned none. He drank alone in the corner and counted his failure. Fine coat, polished cane, a scar over his brow that should have marked him as dangerous. It bought stares, not fear. Fear needed a story. Stories needed a mouth. Maloria Emery found him there. She was a courtesan who could talk a magistrate out of his verdict, and half of Skaldir owed her a secret. She slid into the seat across from him without asking. She loved him, though she had never said it, and she hid it behind a smile that gave nothing away. "You're trying to frighten farmers," she said. "You can't frighten people who don't know your name." "Then give me one," Parker said. She traced the rim of his glass with one finger. "A name isn't earned in a night. But it can be planted. I know every tavern from the docks to the hills. I know who talks and who repeats." She leaned close. "By next week, men will whisper about the one who walks with a silver cane. I'll tell them what you've done." "I've done nothing." "You will have," she said. "By the time I finish, no one will remember the difference." Parker studied her. He trusted no one, but she asked for nothing in return, and that troubled him more than a price would have. "Why?" he said. "Because I want to see what you become." She stood, smoothed her red dress, and was gone before he could press her. Within days the tavern changed. Parker walked in and the noise dropped. Men he had never met stepped aside. The same merchant who laughed now pushed a full purse across the bar without being asked. "For the trouble the other night," he mumbled, eyes down. Parker took it and said nothing. The room watched his cane like it was a blade. He had a name now. Maloria had built it faster than any deed could. But standing among the frightened, Parker understood the cost. The legend belonged to her mouth, not his hands. She could raise it in a night. She could break it just as fast. His fear, his rise, his fortune to come — all of it now leaned on one woman who wanted something from him she would not name.
