Chapter 1

Parker Winterbloom wanted to be a ranger. Not someday. Now. This morning he had walked to the ranger station and told the rangers he could speak to every animal on Blinding Summit. They laughed. The oldest one crouched down and said, "Son, you've never spent one night out there alone. Come back when you've survived the tundra." Then they shut the door. Parker walked home through the snow with his jaw tight. He was ten. He had blonde hair and blue eyes and warm boots, and he understood the tundra better than any grown man. But understanding was not proof. He needed proof. At the homestead, warm light glowed in the windows. Inside, purple leaves brushed the greenhouse glass, and sap dripped from the tall trees his family grew for medicine. His father knelt by the fireplace, splitting kindling. His father was a big man, quick to laugh, and he had taught Parker every knot and track and edible root. "They won't take me," Parker said. "They want me to survive a night out there alone." His father set down the axe. He didn't laugh this time. "Then you'll do it," he said. "But not because I say so. Because you're ready." He handed Parker a small knife and one match. "That's all. Prove it to yourself first." Parker's mother watched from the greenhouse. She was strong and calm, and she nurtured every sick fox and hare that wandered near. She wanted to argue. Parker saw it in her face. Instead she wrapped bread in cloth and pressed it into his hands. "Listen to the animals," she said. "They'll tell you when a storm turns." Parker hiked out before dusk. Wind cut across the open snow. He found a hollow beneath a rock ledge and started clearing it. A ptarmigan chattered from a drift. "Weather's coming," it said. "Fast." Parker asked how fast. The bird flicked its wings toward the west. "Before dark." He worked quicker. He packed snow into a wall, cut spruce boughs for a floor, and struck his one match under dry moss. The flame caught. He fed it twigs until it held. The storm hit hard. Snow roared past his shelter, but the wall blocked the worst of it. Parker sat by his small fire, chewing bread, listening to the wind. A fox pushed into the hollow and curled beside him, shivering. Parker shared his warmth. All night they kept each other alive. At dawn the sky cleared. Parker walked straight to the ranger station, cold and grinning. He described the storm, the shelter, the fox. The old ranger studied him a long time. "You really made it through that," the ranger said. It was not a question anymore. "I did," Parker said. "Alone." The ranger nodded slowly. "Then I can't turn you away for being young." He reached behind the desk and pulled out a form. "But surviving a night isn't the same as being sworn in. There's a trial. And no one your age has ever passed it."
