Chapter 1

Pedro Pascal wanted one honest conversation. Not an autograph. Not a photo. Just someone who talked to him like a man and not a movie. But he couldn't walk ten feet without a crowd forming. Last week a coffee shop near his old farmhouse emptied its tables the second he sat down. Phones went up. A woman asked him to say a line from his show. He said it, smiled, and left before his coffee cooled. So tonight he tried something new. He stood in his bedroom and pulled on a delivery driver's uniform. Crisp branded shirt. Gray work pants with cargo pockets. He studied himself in the dark window glass. A stranger looked back. Nobody photographs the guy who brings the packages. His dog watched from the bed. The animal was a hunting breed, brown and white, with a pair of broad feathered wings folded along its back. It tilted its head, confused by the costume. "Stay," Pedro said. "I won't be long." He drove to a small bar he'd never dared enter. Inside, the room was warm and low. A few people nursed drinks. Nobody turned. Nobody reached for a phone. Pedro ordered a beer and felt his shoulders drop for the first time in months. Then a woman slid onto the stool beside him. She was arguing with the bartender about a plant. "It's blooming tonight," she said. "The titan arum. Smells like a dead raccoon and I love it. You're all cowards." The bartender laughed and walked off. She turned to Pedro and looked right through the uniform. "You deliver flowers?" she asked. "Because I need someone brave enough to drive one across town." "I deliver whatever fits in the truck," Pedro said. She grinned and stuck out her hand. No recognition crossed her face. No camera. Just a person, curious about another person. They talked for an hour. About her strange plant. About the quiet of a bar nobody famous visited. Pedro laughed until his jaw ached. For sixty minutes, he was just a man on a stool. Then her eyes narrowed. She leaned closer. "Wait," she said slowly. "Your voice. I know your voice." Pedro's stomach dropped. He set down his beer. "You're him," she whispered. "The actor." The magic cracked. He waited for the phone, the gasp, the request. Instead she pulled back, hurt tightening her mouth. "You lied to me," she said. "The whole time. You let me think you were nobody." "I just wanted to talk," Pedro said. "Like a real person." "Then you shouldn't have started with a costume." She stood. She dropped cash on the bar. "I liked the delivery guy. I don't know him at all." She walked out. Pedro sat alone in the quiet bar he'd finally found. He had his private place. He had met the one person who saw past the fame. And he'd ruined it with the very disguise that made the meeting possible.
