Chapter 1

Penn Cross moved to Tallowwood to be alone, and now he stood behind his counter hoping someone would stay. He had bought the old bookstore for its silence. He kept his cap low and his hoodie up. He liked that people left him alone. He liked it until last week, when the quiet started to feel like a locked room. The green wooden sign above his door read Mooney's. Penn had never bothered to change it. The shelves leaned. Dust sat on the top rows. He dusted them anyway, slow, killing the afternoon. A book slid loose and fell open on the floor. Two names were written inside the cover, joined by a heart. Some stranger, long ago, had given this book to someone they loved. Penn picked it up. He read the names twice. He had crossed a whole map to escape people, and here was proof that a person could matter more than a place. His chest ached in a way silence had never fixed. He set the book on the counter, faced up, where a customer would see it. Then he did the thing he had avoided for six months. He walked to the door and turned the crooked cardboard sign from CLOSED to OPEN. The bell above him rattled. Cold air came in. For a long time nothing happened. Penn almost turned the sign back. He told himself the change was foolish. He told himself he did not need anyone. Then footsteps stopped outside the window. A shape studied the display, then the door pushed open. The bell rattled again. A young woman stepped in, shaking rain from her sleeves. She looked past the shelves, past the register, straight at Penn's shadowed face under the cap. Most people looked away when they saw him. She did not. She met his eyes and held them, as if the hood and the quiet meant nothing at all. "You finally opened," she said. "I've walked past this window for weeks. I kept wondering if anyone lived behind that hood." Penn's hand tightened on the counter. He had spent months making sure no one wondered about him. This stranger had wondered anyway. "I'm open now," he said. His voice came out rough from disuse. She stepped closer and touched the fallen book on the counter, the one with the two names. "Somebody loved this," she said. She looked up. "What made you open today?" Penn did not have a clean answer. He had wanted his true love without knowing where to start. Now a person who saw past his silence stood in his shop, asking the exact question he could not dodge. "I got tired of the quiet," he said. She smiled and set the book down between them. "Then don't rush me out." The door stayed open. The silence Penn had bought was gone. He had wanted to be seen, and now one person in Tallowwood clearly saw him. Winning her trust was another problem entirely, and it had just begun.
