Chapter 11

The far oven kept its fire all night. Periwinkle no longer ran between two dying hearths. But a new worry gnawed at her. She could not see the far clearing from her bakery. The lost might arrive there and find warm bread waiting, then leave before anyone knew they came. They could sit hungry beside a full rack, unnoticed. The oven burned for them, but no one watched the door. She went to the cypress at dawn with a heavy basket. The two bears met her there. She asked the big bear to keep watch at the far oven. The bear grunted and lay down. But the bears could not leave the cypress. Travelers came there all day, and the guiding was their work. A watcher at the far oven would leave the cypress blind. She had no spare pair of eyes. The winged horse landed in the clearing while she stood thinking. It folded its pale wings and pawed the ground, waiting for its load. Every morning it carried her markers deep into the forest, farther than she could walk. It knew paths no one else knew. Periwinkle looked at it and understood. She did not need eyes at one door. She needed a rider who could reach every door. "You find the lost before they wander," she said. "Bring them to the fire, not just the trail." She tied a bell to the horse's harness, a small brass bell from the bakery shelf. "Ring this when you leave someone at the far oven. I will hear it if I am near." But a bell rung in the deep forest would not carry to her bakery. She saw the flaw at once. So she changed the plan. She gave the bell to the little bear instead. "When the horse rings, you run to the cypress and wait," she told it. Then she filled the far oven's rack and left the door propped open, warm light spilling out. The horse would carry each lost soul straight to that light. That day she watched from the cypress. The horse rose and vanished over the trees. An hour passed. Then the little bear's bell rang, faint and clear, from the far clearing. The horse had found someone. Periwinkle ran the short path and reached the open door. A ragged woman sat inside, hands out to the fire, a warm loaf already in her lap. She had not gone hungry. She had not been missed. Periwinkle leaned on the doorframe and breathed. The far oven would no longer feed an empty room. The horse would find the lost and lead them in. The bell would tell her they had come. She had eyes now, and wings, and a warning. But the horse flew one path at a time. If two lost arrived in two places at once, only one would be found.
