Chapter 4

Periwinkle held the warm loaf and made up her mind. She would say yes. The oven was lit, the walls were dry, and travelers needed bread. But the winged woman had walked out before naming her price. What did she want in return? Periwinkle would not bind herself to a bargain she could not read. She set the loaf down and ran to the door. Outside, the winged woman stood among the flower boxes. Her wings threw a long shadow across the gilded trim. She did not turn. "Wait," Periwinkle said. "I want to bake here. But I need to hear your terms first. What do you take from me if I stay?" The winged woman faced her. Her eyes were calm, almost amused. "You think there is a trap in it." "There is always a cost," Periwinkle said. "A lit oven. A clean shop. No one gives those for nothing. Tell me plainly, or I take my flour and go." For a moment neither moved. Then the winged woman stepped close. She pointed through the glowing window at the shelves inside. "Here is the whole of it," she said. "You keep the oven fed. You turn no hungry traveler away. Every loaf you can spare, you give to the lost. That is the price. Not coin. Not your name. Not your years." Periwinkle studied her face for the catch. "And the shop? The gold on the walls?" "Yours to use. Not yours to sell." The winged woman almost smiled. "Break the bargain, and the oven goes cold. That is all the punishment there is." Periwinkle breathed out slow. The terms were clear now. No hidden chain. No stolen years. Only the thing she had wanted from the start, spoken aloud and made real. "Then I accept," she said. "I will feed whoever comes." The winged woman took Periwinkle's flour-dusted hand and pressed it flat against the door. The wood was warm. Something settled in Periwinkle's chest, quiet and certain, like a knot pulled tight. "It is done," the winged woman said. "The bakery is yours to keep, so long as you keep your word." She drew back her hand. Then she looked toward the trees, and her calm broke for the first time. "But this shop sits on the open road," she said. "The lost do not walk roads. They wander off them, into the dark places, and they never find a door. You wanted a bakery for those travelers." She met Periwinkle's eyes. "You have bound yourself to feed the lost, and the lost cannot reach you here." Periwinkle looked at the bright windows, the flower boxes, the sign above the door. She had won the bakery. She had sworn an oath. And now she saw the oath demanded a bakery in a place this one could never be.
